Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
SOPs are developed to provide standardized ways of performing work across a research team or research organizations. SOPs may be developed by the research team to include procedures within a department, clinical setting, or across organizations conducting a similar study. SOPs may be developed internally or by sponsors of studies that are shared among study sites.
SOPs outline ways in which research clinic flows work, ways in which a study is conducted and ways in which roles (e.g., coordinator) are completed. SOPs are able to be used for training new staff, to better organize and remain consistent with work processes, help to team build, and help with recognizing and revising procedures that do not work.
