Single IRB (sIRB)
To help streamline the IRB review process for multi-site and collaborative research, most federally funded research is required to use a single IRB (sIRB) when multiple sites are engaged. This requirement does not include exempt research or research conducted at international sites.
The Pitt IRB has a Reliance team that can assist with this process.
Some considerations:
- If you would like to request that Pitt serve as IRB of Record for external sites, submit a request prior to submission of the grant to the funding agency. Do not commit Pitt to serve in this capacity until the Reliance team has confirmed Pitt is willing to do so.
- Pitt charges fees to conduct IRB review for external sites. The Reliance team will provide a sIRB fee budget for your grant. Failure to budget for sIRB fees may result in Pitt declining to serve as IRB of Record.
- Even when relying on an external IRB, you will still need to maintain an abbreviated PittPRO application.
